LG Refrigerator Error Codes: Er FF, Er IF, Er dH, Er CO & More
LG refrigerators show 'Er' followed by a short code when a fan, sensor, defrost part or board has a problem. Several fan codes are caused by frost or ice blocking the fan, which usually points back to a defrost or door-seal issue. Some codes can be cleared with a reset or a manual defrost; others need a technician.
Freezer fan motor error — often ice blocking the fan.
rF / Er rF
Refrigerator fan motor error — usually from frost build-up.
IF / Er IF
Ice maker fan error — frost or ice build-up, or a failed fan.
dH / Er dH
Freezer defrost fault — the defrost system isn't working.
CO / Er CO
Communication error between the control board and the display.
gF / Er gF
Flow sensor error, or low water pressure to the dispenser and ice maker.
22 / Er 22
Compressor relay problem.
OFF
Not a fault — demo (display) mode is on and cooling is disabled.
FF / Er FF — Freezer fan motor error
Freezer fan motor error — often ice blocking the fan.
Common causes
Frost or ice around the freezer fan
Defrost system problem
Failed fan motor
Try this first
✓Do a manual defrost (unplug, doors open 8+ hours), then restart
When to call: If Er FF returns after a manual defrost, the defrost system or fan motor needs repair.
rF / Er rF — Refrigerator fan motor error
Refrigerator fan motor error — usually from frost build-up.
Common causes
Frost blocking the fresh-food fan
Failed fan motor
Try this first
✓Manual defrost, and check the doors close and seal fully
When to call: Repeated rF codes mean something is letting frost build up — we find and fix it.
IF / Er IF — Ice maker fan error
Ice maker fan error — frost or ice build-up, or a failed fan.
Common causes
Ice on the ice-maker fan
Misaligned door or worn gasket letting humid air in
Failed fan motor
Try this first
✓Manual defrost
✓Check door alignment and gaskets
When to call: In humid Pinellas kitchens, a small door gap can ice up this fan quickly. We repair the fan and the cause.
dH / Er dH — Freezer defrost fault
Freezer defrost fault — the defrost system isn't working.
Common causes
Ice build-up on the evaporator
Blown thermal fuse
Failed defrost heater
Main board problem
Try this first
✓Unplug for 2 minutes to reset
When to call: If dH persists, the defrost heater, fuse or board needs testing. Left alone, the freezer ices over and cooling drops.
CO / Er CO — Communication error between the control board and the display
Communication error between the control board and the display.
Common causes
Loose or damaged wiring, often through the door hinge
Failed display or main board
Try this first
✓Power-cycle the refrigerator once
When to call: Needs a technician to trace the wiring and test the boards.
gF / Er gF — Flow sensor error, or low water pressure to the dispenser and ice maker
Flow sensor error, or low water pressure to the dispenser and ice maker.
Common causes
Low household water pressure
Clogged water filter
Partly closed supply valve or kinked line
Try this first
✓Replace an old water filter
✓Make sure the supply valve is fully open and the line isn't kinked
When to call: If pressure is good and the code persists, the flow sensor or valve needs service.
22 / Er 22 — Compressor relay problem
Compressor relay problem.
Common causes
Failed compressor relay or related control circuit
Try this first
✓None — check the fridge temperature and protect your food
When to call: Call promptly — the fridge may stop cooling. We test the compressor circuit properly before recommending any major repair.
OFF — Not a fault
Not a fault — demo (display) mode is on and cooling is disabled.
Common causes
Demo mode activated accidentally or left on from the store
Try this first
✓On many models, open the fridge door and hold Refrigerator + Ice Plus for 5 seconds; check your manual for your model
When to call: No repair needed unless the fridge still won't cool after leaving demo mode.
How to reset
Unplug the refrigerator for about 2 minutes, then plug it back in. For fan codes caused by ice, LG recommends a full manual defrost: empty the fridge, unplug it and leave the doors open for at least 8 hours (put towels down for melt-water).
Codes vary by model and year. Check your owner's manual for your exact model — if a code isn't listed here, call us and we'll look it up.
