Quick answer

A refrigerator that clicks every few minutes and isn't cooling usually has a failed start relay or overload, the part that helps the compressor start. If the relay is good, the compressor itself may be failing to start. A single click when the fridge turns on or off is normal.

Not every click is a problem. Thermostats and control relays click as the fridge cycles, and older fridges with a mechanical defrost timer click when defrost starts and ends. Those are single clicks, spread hours apart, with a fridge that stays cold.

The click that matters is the repeating one: a click from the bottom back, a brief hum, silence, then another click a few minutes later. That's the compressor trying and failing to start, and the fridge will warm up until it's fixed.

Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before removing the rear access panel. The start relay sits on the compressor, which can be hot. Don't bend refrigerant tubing near the compressor. Per the USDA, a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours without power or cooling. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 if the door stays shut. Perishable food that sat above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be thrown out.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Failed start relay or overload

The start relay plugs onto the side of the compressor and gives it a boost at startup. The overload protects the compressor from overheating. When the relay fails, the compressor can't start, the overload trips with a click, and the cycle repeats every few minutes.

    Check it yourself
Listen at the bottom back of the fridge. Click, short hum, silence, repeat — and a fridge that's warming — is the classic pattern. Many relays rattle when removed and shaken, but leave testing to a technician if you're not comfortable around the compressor.
    The fix · typical $140 – $240
Replace the start relay and overload. It's quick and one of the least expensive refrigerator repairs.
  2. 2.Compressor struggling to start

If a new relay doesn't stop the clicking, the compressor may have a failed winding or be mechanically stuck. A dirty condenser coil or dead condenser fan can overheat it first, so those get checked too.

    Check it yourself
No safe homeowner check beyond cleaning the condenser coil and confirming the fan spins freely.
    The fix · typical $650 – $1,400
An EPA-certified technician tests the compressor windings and, if it has failed, replaces it and recharges the system. On an older fridge, we'll talk honestly about whether it's worth it.
  3. 3.Normal restart delay after a power outage

Many fridges wait several minutes before restarting the compressor after power returns. Short outages and flickers are common during summer storms here, and a click when the compressor finally starts is normal. Repeated brownouts are also tough on relays.

    Check it yourself
If the clicking started right after an outage, give the fridge 15 to 30 minutes. A steady hum after one click means it's working.
    The fix
No repair needed if it settles down. If the clicking continues, the relay or board may have been damaged.
  4. 4.Ice maker trying to fill with no water

If the ice maker is on but the water is shut off, the module keeps cycling and the water inlet valve clicks or buzzes as it opens. This is common in second homes where the water was turned off before leaving.

    Check it yourself
Make sure the water supply valve is open. If you don't use the ice maker, turn it off at the control panel or raise the shut-off arm.
    The fix · typical $170 – $290
No parts needed if the water was off. If the valve clicks with water on and nothing flows, the valve is replaced.
  5. 5.Fan blade striking something

A rhythmic tick can be a fan blade hitting debris or ice. In the freezer, ice around the evaporator fan points to a defrost problem. At the bottom back, it's the condenser fan catching debris.

    Check it yourself
Listen at the freezer back panel and at the bottom back to locate the tick. Look for frost on the freezer back panel.
    The fix · typical $190 – $340
Clear debris from the condenser fan. If ice is the cause, the failed defrost part is replaced.
  6. 6.Control board relay

Electronic fridges switch the compressor, fans and heaters with relays on the main board. A relay that chatters on and off, or a board resetting itself, can cause repeated clicking from the control area.

    Check it yourself
Note where the click comes from and whether any error code appears on the display.
    The fix · typical $290 – $560
We test the board's outputs before replacing it.

When to call a technician

Call if the clicking repeats every few minutes and the fridge is warming. It's usually a fast, inexpensive relay fix, but it won't fix itself, and repeated failed starts are hard on the compressor. The $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair.

Common questions

Why does my refrigerator click every few minutes?

+

Usually the compressor is trying to start and failing. The start relay or overload clicks off, waits, and tries again. A failed start relay is the most common cause.

Is it normal for a refrigerator to click?

+

A single click when the compressor turns on or off, or when defrost begins and ends, is normal. Repeated clicking with no cooling is not.

Can I keep using my fridge while it's clicking?

+

If it's clicking and warming, move perishables to a cooler and get it fixed. Constant failed starts can overheat the compressor.

How much does a start relay replacement cost?

+

In our area it typically runs $140 to $240 total, including the $79 diagnostic credit.

My fridge started clicking after a storm. What happened?

+

It may just be waiting out its built-in restart delay. If it keeps clicking after 30 minutes, the surge or brownout may have damaged the start relay or control board.
