Ice makers fail more than any other part of a modern refrigerator — and in a Florida summer you notice fast. We repair built-in refrigerator ice makers and freestanding undercounter ice machines in homes, condos and vacation rentals.
Most ice-maker problems come from water supply, freezing in the fill tube or a failed ice-maker module, and most are fixed in one visit.
An ice maker needs three things to work: water at the right pressure, a freezer cold enough to freeze it, and a module that fills, freezes, harvests and senses when the bin is full. We test each step in order — water flow at the valve, freezer temperature, then the module — so you pay for the part that actually failed. The $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair, and parts are covered for a year.
Common ice maker problems we fix
No ice at all
Frozen fill tube, failed water-inlet valve, clogged filter, bad ice-maker module or a freezer that's not cold enough (it needs about 0°F).
Small, hollow or few cubes
Low water pressure, a clogged filter or a valve that's failing. Mineral scale on the valve screen is a common cause.
Ice jammed or bin frozen solid
Common on Samsung and LG French-door models with in-door ice makers — a seal or heater problem lets warm, humid air in.
Leaking water or ice in the freezer
Overfilling from a sticking valve, or a cracked fill cup. A module that's no longer level can also spill water before it freezes.
Ice maker won't stop making ice
The shut-off arm or optical bin sensor isn't detecting a full bin. Arms get bent or stuck; optical sensors get blocked by frost or a misplaced bin.
Ice tastes or smells bad
Ice absorbs odors from the freezer. An old water filter, stale ice sitting for weeks, or a dirty supply line is usually the cause. Dump the bin, change the filter and toss the first few batches.
Dispenser won't push ice out
Cubes frozen together in the bucket, a broken auger motor, or a failed dispenser switch or door flap. If you hear the motor but get no ice, it's usually a clump jamming the auger.
Undercounter ice machine not producing
Scale on the evaporator plate, a failed water pump or a dirty condenser. These machines need regular descaling in hard-water areas.

Vacation rentals and ice
On Clearwater Beach, a rental with no ice gets a bad review. We prioritize property-manager and host calls so the ice maker is fixed before the next check-in.
Repair or replace?
An ice maker module is a fraction of the cost of a new refrigerator — almost always repair it.
Our repair-or-replace guide →Before you call
- Make sure the ice maker's arm or switch is on
- Check the freezer is near 0°F
- Replace a water filter older than 6 months
- Confirm the water dispenser works (rules out the water supply)
- Look for ice frozen in the fill tube at the back of the ice maker — a hair dryer on low can clear it
- Empty the bin and break up any clumps that could be jamming the auger

Ice Maker repair FAQ
How much does ice maker repair cost?
+
Most refrigerator ice maker repairs run $140–$390 total, including the $79 diagnostic credit. Clearing a frozen fill tube is at the low end; a new ice maker module is $210–$390. Undercounter machine service and water pumps run $170–$380.
Why is my ice maker not making ice?
+
Check that it's switched on, the freezer is near 0°F and the water filter isn't old. If the water dispenser works but no ice comes, the fill tube may be frozen or the module has failed. If neither works, look at the inlet valve and water supply.
Why does my Samsung ice maker keep freezing up?
+
Many Samsung French-door refrigerators with in-door ice makers let humid air into the ice compartment, which freezes the ice and the fan. The fix is usually a defrost repair or updated part, not a new fridge.
Can you come today? I have guests or renters arriving.
+
We prioritize vacation-rental and host calls in Clearwater Beach and on Island Estates, and same-day is often possible. While you wait, a bag of ice in the freezer bin keeps guests happy — just tell them the dispenser is out.
How long does a new ice maker take to make ice?
+
After a repair or a new install, expect about 24 hours before the first full batch, and a few days to fill the bin. Throw out the first few batches, which can carry air or loose carbon from a new filter.
Why is my ice maker making less ice in summer?
+
When the kitchen is hot and the freezer door is opened often, the freezer runs warmer and each batch takes longer to freeze. Keep the freezer near 0°F, clean the condenser coil, and check that the door gasket seals. If production stays low once things settle down, the water valve or filter is next.
How often should I change my refrigerator water filter?
+
About every six months, or sooner if flow slows down. A clogged filter starves the ice maker of water and gives you small, hollow cubes. Use a filter rated for your model so it seals properly and doesn't leak.
Do you repair undercounter ice machines?
+
Yes, residential undercounter ice machines from brands like Scotsman, U-Line and GE. We descale and service them as well as repair them. Use only the cleaner your manufacturer approves — some evaporator plates are nickel-plated and damaged by the wrong descaler.
Is it worth fixing the ice maker or just replacing the fridge?
+
Fix the ice maker. Even a full module replacement costs a small fraction of a new refrigerator. The exception is a fridge with a separate, bigger problem like a failed compressor, which we'd tell you about before quoting.
