Quick answer

Samsung ice makers mounted in the fridge door freeze up mostly because humid fresh-food air leaks into the ice compartment through a worn seal, then turns to frost that jams the ice maker and auger. A failing ice-room fan or an ice maker heater fault can cause the same problem. A manual defrost clears it temporarily, but the seal or part has to be fixed to stop it coming back.

Many Samsung French-door and four-door refrigerators put the ice maker in a small insulated 'ice room' on the left fridge door. That compartment has to stay below freezing while it sits inside a fridge kept around 37°F. Cold air is ducted to it from the freezer, and a small fan circulates it around the ice maker.

That design works well while the seals are tight. Once moist fridge air gets in, it freezes on the ice maker, the bucket and the auger. You'll see clumped ice, a frosted compartment, a rattling or loud fan, water dripping below the door, or ice that won't dispense. It's one of the most common Samsung repairs, and it is fixable.

Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator or turn off the ice maker before reaching into the ice compartment. Keep fingers out of the dispenser chute and away from the auger. Never chip ice with a knife or screwdriver; it's easy to crack the ice maker or puncture a duct. Food in the fridge stays safe for about 4 hours with the door closed if you unplug it to defrost.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Leaking ice compartment seal

The ice room has its own cover and gasket. When that seal wears, shrinks or gets knocked out of place, warm humid air from the fresh-food section seeps in and condenses as frost. The frost builds around the ice maker, fill tube and auger until things jam.

    Check it yourself
Look for frost or ice crusted around the edges of the ice compartment cover, not just inside the bucket. Check that the cover latches firmly and the gasket isn't torn.
    The fix · typical $190 – $360
Clear the ice and reseal or replace the ice room seal and related parts so moist air can't get back in.
  2. 2.Ice room fan failing

A small fan behind or above the ice maker moves cold air around it. If it slows or stops, ice can harvest before it's fully frozen and water ends up in the bucket, where it freezes into a solid block. A fan blade hitting frost also causes a loud rattle or buzz from the door.

    Check it yourself
Listen near the ice compartment with the fridge door switch pressed. A loud scraping or buzzing points to the fan hitting ice; silence with a warm compartment points to a dead fan.
    The fix · typical $190 – $360
Clear the ice and replace the ice room fan motor if it's failing.
  3. 3.Ice maker heater or ice-room sensor fault

Many Samsung ice makers use a small heater to loosen cubes or keep the area around the ice maker from icing, plus sensors that tell the control how cold the ice room is. If one of these fails, frost builds or cubes stick in the tray.

    Check it yourself
No simple homeowner test. Note any code on the display; an ice maker code points the diagnosis toward the assembly and its circuit.
    The fix · typical $190 – $360
Test the heater and sensor circuits and replace the failed component.
  4. 4.Ice clumping from infrequent use or warm door openings

Ice that sits in the bucket for days slowly sticks together, especially if the fridge door is opened often, as it is in a busy kitchen or a vacation rental. A clumped bucket jams the auger even when the ice maker itself is fine.

    Check it yourself
Remove the bucket and break up clumps. If the bucket and compartment have no frost on the walls, the problem may just be usage.
    The fix
Empty the bucket periodically or turn ice off when you're away. If clumping returns with frost on the walls, the seal or fan is the real cause.
  5. 5.Water inlet valve overfilling

A valve that doesn't close fully keeps dribbling water into the mold. The overflow spills into the bucket and freezes the cubes together, or runs down and freezes in the chute.

    Check it yourself
Look for a solid sheet of ice in the bucket or icicles under the ice maker tray. Note whether water drips from the dispenser.
    The fix · typical $170 – $290
    Replace the water inlet valve.
  6. 6.Ice maker assembly failed

The ice maker itself contains the motor, tray and sensors. If it stops twisting the tray or misreads when the bin is full, it can overfill or stall. Some Samsung models display 39E or 39C for an ice maker fault.

    Check it yourself
Look for cubes stuck in the tray that never drop, and note any ice maker code. Your manual describes the ice maker test button if your model has one.
    The fix · typical $210 – $390
Replace the ice maker assembly. We also address the seal at the same time, since a new ice maker in a leaky compartment will ice up again.

When to call a technician

Call if the compartment frosts up again within a few weeks of a manual defrost, if the ice room fan is loud, or if water is dripping from the door. Defrosting alone only resets the clock. We fix the seal, fan or heater that let the frost in. If your Samsung is still under warranty, contact Samsung first; out of warranty, the $79 diagnostic is credited to our repair.

Common questions

Why does my Samsung ice maker keep freezing up?

+

Usually because humid air is leaking into the ice compartment through a worn seal and freezing there. A weak ice room fan or a heater fault can cause the same buildup. Until the cause is fixed, the ice will keep coming back.

How do I manually defrost a Samsung ice maker?

+

Turn the ice maker off, remove the bucket and let the compartment thaw with the fridge door open, placing towels below. Some models have a forced-defrost mode; the steps vary, so follow your model's manual. Never chip at the ice.

What does 39E or 39C mean on a Samsung fridge?

+

It points to the ice maker — usually its motor, sensor or the ice-full arm. A reset sometimes clears it. If it returns, the assembly or its wiring needs testing.

Why is my Samsung fridge making a loud noise from the door?

+

Usually the ice room fan blade is hitting frost. That's a sign the compartment is icing up, so it's worth fixing before the fan fails.

Are you a Samsung authorized service center?

+

No. We're an independent, locally owned repair service and we're not factory-authorized for any brand. We repair out-of-warranty Samsung refrigerators directly, with our own 45-day parts and labor warranty.

How much does a Samsung ice maker repair cost?

+

In our area, an in-door ice maker defrost and seal repair typically runs $190 to $360 total, and a new ice maker assembly $210 to $390, including the $79 diagnostic credit.
