The quick rule
Repair when the appliance is less than halfway through its typical life and the repair is less than half the cost of a comparable new one.
Replacewhen it's near the end of its life and the repair is expensive — especially a failed compressor on a standard refrigerator, a cracked tub on a washer, or a control board on a budget model.
Exceptions:built-in and premium appliances (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, built-in KitchenAid) are almost always worth repairing — replacing one often means changing cabinets. And in coastal Florida, a newer appliance isn't always tougher: many modern control boards are more sensitive to surges and humidity.
Not sure? Our $79 diagnostic gives you a written answer and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.
Typical appliance lifespans
| Appliance | Typical life (years) |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 10 – 15 |
| Built-in refrigerator (Sub-Zero etc.) | 20+ |
| Washer | 10 – 13 |
| Dryer | 12 – 15 |
| Dishwasher | 9 – 12 |
| Range / oven | 13 – 17 |
| Microwave (over-the-range) | 8 – 10 |
| Freezer | 12 – 16 |
Commonly cited ranges. Salt air, hard water and heavy use (rentals) push appliances toward the low end.
Repair-or-replace questions
What is the 50% rule for appliances?
+
If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance, and the appliance is past half its expected life, replacing it is usually the better value. It's a guideline, not a law — built-in and premium appliances often justify repairs well beyond 50%.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old refrigerator?
+
Usually, for fans, defrost parts, valves, ice makers and relays — those repairs typically run $150–$400. A failed compressor on a standard 10+ year-old fridge usually isn't worth it.
Will you try to sell me a new appliance?
+
No. We don't sell appliances, so there's nothing in it for us either way. If replacement makes more sense, we'll tell you and leave you the written diagnosis.
