We repair upright, chest and built-in freezers — the garage freezer full of fish from a Clearwater charter, the column freezer in a custom kitchen, and the freezer section of every refrigerator.
Garage freezers in Florida run in 90°F+ heat for months, which is hard on compressors and start relays. Catch problems early and most are inexpensive.
When a freezer stops freezing, the clock is running on everything inside it, so freezer calls get the same priority as refrigerators. Diagnosis starts with the cheap and common parts — the start relay, the fans, the defrost system and the door seal — before we ever talk about the sealed system. You get a flat written price first, the $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair, and parts and labor carry a 45-day warranty.
Common freezer problems we fix
Not freezing
Failed start relay, condenser fan, defrost problem or a refrigerant leak. If you can hear the compressor running but the freezer is warm, the defrost system or evaporator fan is the first place we look.
Heavy frost build-up
Worn door gasket or a failed defrost heater, timer or thermostat. Frost-free uprights should never build thick frost on the back wall; if they do, the defrost cycle has stopped working.
Running constantly
Dirty condenser coil, a bad gasket or garage heat beyond the unit's rating.
Clicking and not starting
Usually the start relay or overload — a quick, low-cost fix. The compressor tries to start, overheats, and the overload clicks off every few minutes.
Chest freezer sweating on the outside
Many chest freezers use the outer walls as the condenser, so the cabinet feels warm — that's normal. Condensation on the outside usually means high humidity or a lid that isn't sealing, which lets moist air in.
Water or ice on the floor
On frost-free uprights, a blocked defrost drain freezes and spills melt water. On chest freezers, a drain plug left open after manual defrosting is a common cause.
Freezer alarm going off
Most alarms trigger on high temperature or a door left ajar. If the door is shut and the alarm keeps sounding, the freezer is genuinely warming and needs to be checked before food thaws.
Loud noise or vibration
A worn evaporator or condenser fan motor, a fan blade striking ice, or a compressor mount that's loosened. Garage floors that aren't level make it worse.

Garage freezers in Florida heat
Most freezers are rated for spaces up to about 100–110°F. An un-insulated Pinellas garage can exceed that in July. Keep the coils clean and the unit off the west wall if you can.
Repair or replace?
Relays, fans and defrost parts are worth repairing. A sealed-system repair on an inexpensive chest freezer usually isn't.
Our repair-or-replace guide →Before you call
- Check the thermostat setting
- Make sure the door seals on a dollar bill
- Clean dust off the condenser coil
- Plug the freezer directly into the wall — extension cords and power strips can starve the compressor on start-up
- Check whether a GFCI outlet in the garage has tripped

Freezer repair FAQ
My freezer stopped working — how long will food last?
+
A full freezer keeps food frozen about 48 hours with the door closed; half-full, about 24. Call us early and we'll prioritize the visit.
How much does freezer repair cost?
+
Most freezer repairs run $140–$340 total, including the $79 diagnostic credit. Start relays are at the low end; defrost parts and fan motors fall in the middle. Sealed-system repairs run $600–$1,200, and on an inexpensive freezer we'll usually advise against that.
Can you come today?
+
Freezers that aren't freezing get priority, and same-day is often possible in Clearwater, Dunedin and Largo. Keep the door shut until we arrive and move the most valuable items to another freezer or a cooler if you can.
Why is my freezer not freezing but the light is on?
+
The light runs on its own circuit, so it only tells you the freezer has power. A clicking sound every few minutes points to a failed start relay. If the compressor runs but it's still warm, the defrost system, evaporator fan or condenser fan is the usual suspect.
Can I keep a freezer in my Florida garage?
+
Yes, but check the manual for its rated ambient range — models sold as 'garage-ready' are built for wider temperature swings. Keep at least a few inches of clearance around it, keep the coils clean, and shade it from direct afternoon sun.
My freezer got wet in a storm surge. Can it be fixed?
+
If salt water reached the compressor, wiring or controls — common in Pinellas garages after Helene and Milton in 2024 — repair usually isn't worth it, because corrosion keeps spreading after the water drains. If it only got splashed, we can inspect it and give you an honest answer.
Should I repair or replace an old freezer?
+
Start relays, fans, gaskets and defrost parts are worth repairing on almost any freezer. A sealed-system leak or compressor on a basic chest or upright freezer usually costs close to a new one, so we'll tell you that before quoting the work.
How long does freezer repair take?
+
Start relays, fans and gaskets usually take under an hour. A defrost repair can take longer if the evaporator is packed with ice, because it has to be melted before the new part can be tested. Sealed-system work is a longer job and is often scheduled separately.
How do I defrost a chest freezer?
+
Unplug it, move the food to coolers, open the lid and drain plug, and let the ice melt with towels underneath. Don't chip ice with a knife — puncturing the liner can hit a refrigerant line. Dry it fully before plugging back in.
