Quick answer

A freezer that won't freeze usually has a leaking door or lid seal, a failed start relay, a coil that can't shed heat, or, on frost-free uprights, a failed fan or defrost part. Garage freezers often struggle in summer heat. Check the seal, the setting and the airflow around the freezer before anything else.

This guide is for standalone upright and chest freezers. Chest freezers are simple: most have no fan and no automatic defrost, so problems tend to be the seal, the start components or the sealed system. Frost-free upright freezers add a fan and a defrost system, which work just like a refrigerator's.

Many freezers around Clearwater and Largo live in the garage, and that matters. A garage in a Florida summer is often far hotter than the house, and freezers not built for that heat run hard and lose ground. The causes below are ordered from most to least likely.

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before removing any panel or cleaning the coil. Never chip ice with a sharp tool; a punctured evaporator ends most freezers. Refrigerant work is for EPA-certified technicians only. Per the USDA, a full freezer holds food safely for about 48 hours with the door closed, a half-full one about 24.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Door or lid seal leaking

A torn, stiff or out-of-shape gasket lets warm air in constantly. The freezer can't catch up, and frost builds near the leak. On chest freezers, a lid that doesn't close flat because of overfilling has the same effect.

    Check it yourself
Close the door or lid on a dollar bill at several points around the seal. It should resist when pulled. Look for heavy frost concentrated on one corner or edge.
    The fix · typical $170 – $320
Replace the gasket. Sometimes cleaning a sticky gasket and warming it with a hair dryer on low restores the shape.
  2. 2.Failed start relay or overload

The start relay helps the compressor start. When it fails, the compressor clicks on and off without running. Garage heat shortens the life of these parts, which is why we replace a lot of them in summer.

    Check it yourself
Listen near the compressor at the bottom back. A click every few minutes with no steady hum is the sign.
    The fix · typical $140 – $240
Replace the start relay and overload. It's one of the least expensive freezer repairs.
  3. 3.Hot location or blocked condenser

The freezer has to dump its heat into the room. Many chest freezers do that through coils built into the outer walls, so the cabinet feels warm and needs space around it. Uprights with exposed coils get clogged with dust. Either way, a hot or cramped spot means poor freezing.

    Check it yourself
Check the manual for the rated room temperature range and clearances. Pull the freezer a few inches from the wall, clear clutter around it and vacuum any exposed coil.
    The fix
Improve ventilation or move the freezer to a cooler spot. For a garage, a model rated for garage use is the better long-term answer.
  4. 4.Fan motor failed (frost-free uprights)

Frost-free uprights use an evaporator fan to move cold air through the cabinet, and many also have a condenser fan near the compressor. If either stops, the freezer warms even though the compressor runs.

    Check it yourself
Open the door and listen for the inside fan; on some models you need to press the door switch. Feel for warm airflow at the bottom grille.
    The fix · typical $180 – $310
    Replace the failed fan motor.
  5. 5.Defrost system failure (frost-free uprights)

If the defrost heater or defrost thermostat fails, frost blocks the evaporator coil and airflow stops. The freezer slowly warms over several days, and you'll often see frost on the back panel.

    Check it yourself
Look for heavy frost on the interior back panel. A freezer that works again for a few days after a full manual defrost points to this.
    The fix · typical $190 – $340
Test and replace the defrost heater or thermostat, then clear the ice.
  6. 6.Temperature control or thermostat

The control tells the compressor when to run. A failed thermostat or electronic control can stop calling for cooling even when the cabinet is warm.

    Check it yourself
Make sure the control is set to its normal position and hasn't been bumped. Turn it to the coldest setting briefly; if the compressor doesn't start, the control may be at fault.
    The fix
Test and replace the thermostat or control. We quote the exact part after diagnosis.
  7. 7.Sealed system: compressor or refrigerant leak

If the seal, start components, fans and defrost all check out, a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak remains. It's the least likely and most expensive cause.

    Check it yourself
No safe homeowner check beyond ruling out the causes above.
    The fix · typical $600 – $1,200
An EPA-certified technician diagnoses, repairs and recharges the system. On an inexpensive freezer, we'll usually tell you replacement makes more sense.

When to call a technician

Call if the freezer is above 0°F and you've checked the seal, setting and ventilation, or if you hear repeated clicking. Freezers get priority because of what's inside them. The $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair, and you get a written price before work begins.

Common questions

Why is my freezer running but not freezing?

+

The most common reasons are a leaking door seal, a hot or cramped location, a failed fan on frost-free models, or a defrost failure. A clicking freezer that isn't running points to the start relay.

Can a regular freezer work in a Florida garage?

+

Some can and some can't. Check the manual for the rated ambient temperature range. Freezers not rated for summer garage heat often struggle or fail early.

What temperature should a freezer be?

+

The USDA recommends 0°F or below. An inexpensive freezer thermometer is the easiest way to know for sure.

Is my food safe if the freezer stopped working?

+

If the door stayed shut, a full freezer holds about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24, per the USDA. Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be refrozen.

Is it worth repairing an old freezer?

+

For seals, start relays, fans and defrost parts, usually yes. For a sealed-system failure on an inexpensive chest freezer, replacement often makes more sense, and we'll tell you so.
