Quick answer

Frost builds up when humid air gets into the freezer and freezes, or when the automatic defrost system stops working. A worn door gasket, a door left ajar, or frequent opening are the most common causes. In a frost-free freezer, heavy frost on the back panel usually means a failed defrost heater, thermostat or control.

Frost is just moisture from the air. Every time the door opens, warm air comes in, and the water in it freezes onto the coldest surface. On the Gulf coast, that air carries a lot of moisture for much of the year, so a small seal problem shows up as frost fast.

Where the frost forms is the clue. Frost near the door or on one edge points to a seal. An even coat on everything points to warm, moist air getting in or a manual-defrost freezer that's due. A thick sheet on the back panel of a frost-free freezer points to the defrost system.

Safety first: Unplug the freezer before defrosting it. Let ice melt naturally or use bowls of hot water with the door closed. Never chip frost with a knife or ice pick, and don't use a heat gun; both can damage the evaporator or liner. Per the USDA, food in a full freezer stays safe about 48 hours with the door shut, a half-full freezer about 24.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Worn or damaged door gasket

The gasket seals the cabinet with a magnetic strip. Once it tears, flattens or pulls away at a corner, moist air leaks in constantly. Frost collects near the gap first.

    Check it yourself
Close the door on a dollar bill around the whole seal. Any spot where it slides out easily is a leak. Look for frost concentrated near the door edge.
    The fix · typical $170 – $320
Replace the door gasket. Cleaning it with warm soapy water can help a sticky one, but a torn gasket needs replacing.
  2. 2.Manual-defrost freezer due for defrosting

Most chest freezers and some uprights don't defrost themselves. Frost builds slowly by design and has to be melted off by hand. Thick frost wastes energy and reduces space.

    Check it yourself
Check your manual for 'manual defrost.' A common guideline is to defrost once frost reaches about a quarter inch.
    The fix
No repair needed. Unplug, empty into coolers, let it melt, dry it and restart.
  3. 3.Door not closing, overpacked or not level

A package sticking out, an overfilled basket or a freezer tilted forward keeps the door from sealing. Kids and busy households leave doors cracked more often than you'd think.

    Check it yourself
Make sure nothing blocks the door. Check that the freezer tilts slightly back so the door swings shut on its own.
    The fix
Rearrange contents and adjust the leveling feet.
  4. 4.Defrost heater failed (frost-free models)

In a frost-free freezer, a heater melts frost off the evaporator coil several times a day. If the heater burns out, frost builds into ice on the coil and back panel, airflow drops and the freezer warms.

    Check it yourself
Look for a thick frost layer on the interior back panel, often with the freezer getting warmer over days.
    The fix · typical $190 – $340
Test the heater for continuity and replace it if it's open.
  5. 5.Defrost thermostat or sensor failed

The defrost thermostat lets the heater run only while the coil is cold. If it fails, the heater never gets power even though the heater itself is fine.

    Check it yourself
Same symptom as a failed heater: frost on the back panel. There's no simple homeowner test.
    The fix · typical $190 – $340
Test and replace the defrost thermostat or sensor. We usually check the heater and thermostat together.
  6. 6.Defrost timer or control

The timer or electronic control starts each defrost cycle. If it sticks, defrost never begins. Older models use a mechanical timer; newer ones use a board.

    Check it yourself
No reliable homeowner check. Note any error code on the display.
    The fix
Test and replace the timer or control. We quote it after diagnosis because the part varies widely by model.
  7. 7.Clogged defrost drain

Frost-free freezers drain melted frost through a tube to a pan underneath. If the drain clogs or freezes, the water refreezes as a sheet of ice on the freezer floor or under the bottom basket. It looks like frost buildup, but it's really trapped defrost water.

    Check it yourself
Look for smooth, glassy ice on the floor of the freezer rather than fluffy frost on the walls. Check whether the drain opening at the back of the floor is blocked.
    The fix
Thaw and clear the drain, then check why it froze, such as a failed drain heater or a weak defrost cycle. The cost depends on what caused the freeze.

When to call a technician

Call if frost keeps coming back on the back panel of a frost-free freezer within days of defrosting, or if the seal is torn. The $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair, and defrost parts are common enough that many come off the truck.

Common questions

Why is my freezer building up frost so fast?

+

Usually a leaking door seal or a door that isn't closing fully. In a frost-free freezer, fast buildup on the back panel points to a failed defrost part.

How often should I defrost my freezer?

+

Frost-free freezers shouldn't need it. Manual-defrost models need defrosting when frost reaches about a quarter inch, which may be once or twice a year.

Is frost buildup bad for my freezer?

+

Yes. It makes the compressor work harder, wastes energy, reduces space and, in a frost-free model, can stop airflow and let the freezer warm up.

Does humidity cause freezer frost?

+

Humidity supplies the water. In a humid climate, every door opening brings in more moisture, so a small seal leak frosts up faster than it would in a dry one.

Can I use a hair dryer to defrost my freezer?

+

We don't recommend it. Bowls of hot water with the door closed are safer. Keep any electrical appliance away from melting water, and never chip at the ice.
