Quick answer
An ice maker that stops working usually isn't getting water or isn't cold enough. Check that the ice maker is switched on, the freezer is near 0°F, the water filter isn't clogged and the water supply is open. If those check out, a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve or a bad ice maker module is the likely cause.
A refrigerator ice maker does four things on a loop. It fills a mold with water, waits for the freezer to freeze it, harvests the cubes into the bin, and checks whether the bin is full. If any step fails, ice production slows or stops.
So the fix is to test each step in order: is it on, is water arriving, is it cold enough, and is the module working. A lot of 'broken' ice makers turn out to be a shut-off arm, an old filter or a closed valve. This is especially true in seasonal homes, where the water is often turned off when the owners leave.
Causes, from most to least likely
1.Ice maker switched off or bin sensor blocked
Most ice makers have a wire shut-off arm or an on/off setting in the control panel. If the arm is up or the setting is off, it stops making ice. On models with an optical sensor, frost or a misplaced bin can make it think the bin is full.
- Check it yourself
- Lower the shut-off arm or turn the ice maker on at the control panel. Make sure the bin is seated fully. Wipe frost off any sensor eyes.
- The fix
- No parts needed. Give it up to 24 hours to produce its first batch.
2.Freezer not cold enough
The ice maker won't harvest until the mold gets cold enough. A freezer running warm makes slow, hollow or no ice. If ice production dropped at the same time the freezer felt warmer, the problem is cooling, not the ice maker.
- Check it yourself
- Put a thermometer in the freezer for a few hours. Most ice makers work best with the freezer at or near 0°F.
- The fix
- If the freezer is warm, the fix is a cooling repair — fan, defrost or condenser — rather than ice maker parts.
3.Clogged or wrong water filter
As a filter loads up with sediment, water flow drops. The ice maker gets too little water each cycle, making small or hollow cubes, then little or none. A non-matching filter can also restrict flow.
- Check it yourself
- Note when the filter was last changed. Check the dispenser flow; a weak stream suggests the filter. Most manufacturers suggest changing it about every six months.
- The fix
- Replace the filter with one that matches your model number. Discard the first few batches of ice after a change.
4.Water supply off, kinked or low pressure
A closed shutoff, a kinked line behind the fridge, or a partly closed saddle valve starves the ice maker. Inlet valves need steady household pressure to open fully.
- Check it yourself
- Confirm the shutoff valve is fully open. Look behind the fridge for a crushed or kinked line. If the dispenser is also weak with a new filter, the supply is the likely cause.
- The fix
- Open the valve or replace the kinked line. A saddle valve is worth replacing with a proper quarter-turn shutoff.
5.Frozen fill tube
Water reaches the mold through a small tube that passes into the freezer. If water drips slowly from a weak valve or low pressure, it can freeze in the tube and block the next fill. You'll often see an ice plug where the tube enters the mold.
- Check it yourself
- Look behind the ice maker at the fill tube outlet. An ice plug or icicle there is the sign.
- The fix · typical $140 – $240
- Thaw the tube and fix the cause, usually low pressure or a seeping valve, so it doesn't refreeze.
6.Failed water inlet valve
The valve's solenoid opens to let water in. A failed coil won't open at all, and a clogged screen inside the valve restricts flow. If both the ice maker and the water dispenser stopped, the valve is a prime suspect.
- Check it yourself
- With the water on and a new filter installed, try the dispenser. No water from the dispenser and no ice points to the valve or supply.
- The fix · typical $170 – $290
- Test the valve coil and replace the valve.
7.Ice maker module or assembly failed
The module contains the motor, the thermostat or sensor that tells it the mold is frozen, and the ejector or twist mechanism. When it fails, you may see cubes stuck in the mold, a half-rotated ejector or no movement at all.
- Check it yourself
- Look for ice frozen in the mold that never drops. Many models have a test button or test cycle described in the manual.
- The fix · typical $210 – $390
- Replace the ice maker assembly. Most are model-specific and plug in, so the job is usually one visit if the part is in stock.
When to call a technician
Call if water is on, the filter is new, the freezer is near 0°F and you still get no ice after 24 hours. We test water flow at the valve, freezer temperature and the module in that order, so you pay only for the part that failed. The $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair.
45-day parts & labor warranty
Every repair carries a 45-day warranty on the parts we install and on our labor.
What the warranty covers →Common questions
Why is my ice maker not making ice but the water works?
+
Water reaching the dispenser means the supply and valve are at least partly working. Check that the ice maker is on, the freezer is cold enough, and the fill tube isn't frozen. If those are fine, the module is the likely cause.
How long does a new ice maker take to make ice?
+
Most take about 24 hours to produce the first batch after installation or after being turned on. Discard the first few batches.
Why is my ice maker making small or hollow cubes?
+
Low water flow, usually from a clogged filter, low water pressure or a weak inlet valve. Start with the filter.
How do I reset my ice maker?
+
It varies by model. Many have a reset or test button on the ice maker itself; others reset by turning the ice maker off and on at the control panel. Check your manual for the exact steps.
Is it worth fixing an ice maker or just replacing it?
+
The ice maker module is usually a replaceable part, not a reason to replace the fridge. Most fixes run $140 to $390 total in our area.
