Quick answer
Most refrigerator leaks come from a clogged or frozen defrost drain, a leaking water supply line or fitting, or a cracked water inlet valve. Water inside the fridge under the crisper drawers almost always means the defrost drain is blocked. Water on the floor at the back usually means the supply line, the inlet valve or the drain pan.
Where the water shows up tells you most of what you need to know. Water pooling inside the fresh-food section points to the defrost drain. Water on the floor at the front can be the drain pan, the dispenser or the filter. Water at the back is usually the supply line or the water inlet valve.
Act quickly on any leak. A slow drip under a fridge can soak subfloor and cabinets for weeks before it shows. In a Clearwater Beach or Dunedin condo, it may show up in the unit below you first.
Causes, from most to least likely
1.Clogged or frozen defrost drain
During each defrost cycle, melted frost runs down a trough and through a drain tube to a pan under the fridge. Food debris or ice can block that tube. The water then overflows into the fridge, usually under the crisper drawers, or freezes into a sheet on the freezer floor.
- Check it yourself
- Look for water under the crisper drawers or ice on the freezer floor. On some models the drain hole is visible at the back of the compartment. Flushing it with warm water from a turkey baster sometimes clears a soft clog.
- The fix · typical $190 – $340
- Clear the drain properly, then find out why it froze. A failed drain heater, a missing drain strap or a weak defrost heater are common reasons, and those get replaced.
2.Water supply line or fitting
Fridges with ice makers or dispensers are fed by a small plastic or braided line. Plastic lines get brittle and crack, and compression fittings work loose when the fridge is pushed back after cleaning. These leaks run under the fridge and are easy to miss.
- Check it yourself
- Unplug the fridge, slide it out and run a dry paper towel along the line and fittings at the back. A damp towel finds the leak. Check the shutoff valve too.
- The fix
- Tighten or replace the fitting, or replace a cracked line. We recommend a braided stainless line over plastic.
3.Water inlet valve cracked or leaking
The inlet valve, at the lower back of the fridge, opens to send water to the ice maker and dispenser. Its plastic body can crack, and a worn valve can seep or fail to close fully. A valve that won't shut off can also overfill the ice maker.
- Check it yourself
- With the lower back panel off, look for drips or mineral crust around the valve. Turn the water supply off and see whether the leak stops.
- The fix · typical $170 – $290
- Replace the water inlet valve. It's a common one-visit repair.
4.Water filter or filter housing
A filter that isn't fully locked in, the wrong replacement filter, or a cracked filter housing will drip, usually right after a filter change. The leak appears near the filter, inside the fridge or behind the grille, depending on where yours sits.
- Check it yourself
- Remove the filter and reinstall it firmly until it clicks or locks. Make sure the replacement matches your model number exactly.
- The fix
- Reseat or replace the filter. A cracked housing is replaced as a part.
5.Drain pan cracked or out of place
The drain pan under the fridge collects defrost water and lets it evaporate with heat from the compressor area. If it's cracked or got knocked out of position, defrost water lands on the floor instead.
- Check it yourself
- Unplug the fridge, remove the bottom grille and look at the pan with a flashlight. Check for cracks and make sure it sits under the drain tube.
- The fix
- Reposition or replace the pan. If the pan is overflowing, the fridge may be making more defrost water than normal, often from a leaky door seal.
6.Door gasket not sealing
A torn or flattened gasket lets warm, humid air in. That moisture condenses on the inside walls and drips, or it becomes heavy frost that floods the drain during defrost. Muggy summer air makes a bad seal produce a lot of water.
- Check it yourself
- Close the door on a dollar bill at several spots. It should resist when you pull. Look for sweat on the inside walls or along the door edge.
- The fix · typical $170 – $330
- Replace the door gasket. Cleaning a sticky gasket with warm soapy water sometimes restores the seal.
7.Dispenser or ice maker overflow
A leaking dispenser line, a cracked fill cup or an ice maker that overfills can drip down the door or onto the floor. Ice jammed in the chute can also melt and run out of the dispenser.
- Check it yourself
- Look for drips below the dispenser and fused ice clumps in the bin. Turn off the ice maker and see if the leak stops.
- The fix · typical $210 – $390
- Repair the dispenser line, or replace the ice maker or valve that's overfilling.
When to call a technician
Call if water keeps returning after you clear the drain, if the leak is at the inlet valve or inside the door, or if you can't find the source. Shut the water off at the valve until the repair. The $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair.

What the warranty covers →Common questions
Why is there water under my refrigerator crisper drawers?
+
The defrost drain is almost certainly blocked. Melted frost can't reach the pan below, so it overflows into the fridge. Clearing it helps, but if it froze, the cause needs fixing too.
Why is my fridge leaking after I changed the filter?
+
The new filter probably isn't fully seated, or it isn't the exact match for your model. Remove it and reinstall it firmly. If it still leaks, the housing may be cracked.
Is a leaking refrigerator dangerous?
+
The water damages floors and cabinets. Water near the electrical parts at the bottom of the fridge is a shock risk, so unplug it before cleaning up.
Can I still use my fridge while it's leaking?
+
Usually, if it's still cooling. Shut off the water line if the leak is on the supply side, and put towels down until it's repaired.
Why does my fridge leak only sometimes?
+
Defrost leaks happen during or right after the defrost cycle, a few times a day. Supply-side leaks happen when the ice maker or dispenser is filling. The timing helps narrow it down.
