Quick answer

When the freezer stays cold but the fridge warms up, cold air isn't getting from the freezer to the fresh-food section. The most common causes are an evaporator coil iced over from a defrost failure, a failed evaporator fan, or an air damper stuck closed. These are usually one-visit repairs, typically $180 to $340.

On most refrigerators the freezer makes all the cold. A fan blows air across the evaporator coil in the freezer, and a duct and damper send part of that air into the fresh-food side. When that airflow stops, the freezer can stay cold while the fridge warms.

That's good news. It means the compressor and refrigerant are usually fine. The fault is almost always in the fan, the defrost system or the airflow controls. Some French-door and built-in models have a separate fridge evaporator and fan, but the same logic applies.

Safety first: Unplug the fridge before removing the freezer back panel or touching a fan. Let ice melt on its own or with towels soaked in warm water; never chip at frost with a knife or screwdriver, which can puncture the evaporator. Per the USDA, a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours without power or cooling. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 if the door stays shut. Perishable food that sat above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be thrown out.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Defrost system failure

If the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, temperature sensor or control fails, frost keeps building on the evaporator coil. The freezer still gets some cold because it sits right next to the coil. The fridge, at the far end of the airflow, starves first.

    Check it yourself
Look at the freezer back panel. Frost on the panel, or ice visible through the vents, is the sign. A fridge that recovers for a few days after being unplugged for 24 hours almost always has a defrost fault.
    The fix · typical $190 – $340
Test each defrost component, replace the failed one, and clear the ice. Clearing the ice without replacing the part only delays the problem.
  2. 2.Evaporator fan motor stopped

No fan, no airflow to the fridge. The freezer stays cold-ish just from sitting against the coil, which fools many people. A fan that squealed for weeks and then went quiet is a familiar story.

    Check it yourself
Open the freezer door and press the door switch with your finger. You should hear or feel the fan within a few seconds on most models. If it's silent, or you hear the blade scraping ice, that's the problem.
    The fix · typical $180 – $320
Replace the evaporator fan motor behind the freezer panel. If ice stopped the blade, the defrost system is checked as well.
  3. 3.Air damper stuck closed

The damper is a small flap, motorized or thermostat-driven, that opens to let freezer air into the fridge. If its motor fails or it freezes shut, the fridge gets no cold air. In a humid coastal kitchen every door opening brings in moisture, and some of it can freeze around the damper.

    Check it yourself
Find the vent where freezer air enters the fridge, usually near the top rear. With the fridge warm, you should feel cold air there. No airflow while the freezer fan runs points to the damper.
    The fix · typical $190 – $340
Replace the damper assembly or its control. If ice froze it shut, we also find where the moisture is coming from.
  4. 4.Blocked vents or an overpacked freezer

Food pushed against the air outlets in the fridge or the return vents in the freezer blocks the circulation path. A packed freezer after a big shopping trip can choke off airflow to the fridge.

    Check it yourself
Clear a few inches around every vent in both sections. Make sure nothing is pressed against the back wall of the freezer.
    The fix
No repair needed. Rearrange the food and give the fridge a day to recover.
  5. 5.Fridge thermistor or temperature sensor

The control reads the fridge temperature through a thermistor. If the sensor reads colder than it really is, the control never calls for cold air. Some models show an error code when a sensor fails.

    Check it yourself
Note any error code and look it up in your manual. Compare a thermometer reading from a glass of water on the middle shelf with the setting.
    The fix · typical $190 – $340
Test the sensor's resistance against the spec for your model and replace it if it's out of range.
  6. 6.Main control board

The board runs the evaporator fan, damper and defrost heater. If it stops powering one of them, the fridge side fails while the compressor keeps the freezer going. It's less common than the parts above.

    Check it yourself
There's no reliable homeowner check. Note whether the problem began after a power outage or surge.
    The fix · typical $290 – $560
We test the board's outputs before condemning it, then replace it if it's at fault.

When to call a technician

If the fridge is above 40°F and the freezer back panel is frosted, or the freezer fan is silent, call soon. The fridge won't fix itself, and food safety is on a clock. Our $79 diagnostic is credited to the repair, and fans and common defrost parts are often on the truck.

Common questions

Why is my freezer cold but my fridge is warm?

+

Because the fridge borrows cold air from the freezer. A stopped evaporator fan, a frosted evaporator coil or a stuck air damper cuts that airflow, so the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms.

Will unplugging my fridge fix it?

+

Unplugging it for 24 hours with the doors open melts frost off the coil, and cooling may come back for a few days. If it fails again, a defrost part has failed and needs replacing.

Is this an expensive repair?

+

Usually not. Fan motors and defrost parts typically run $180 to $340 total in our area, including the diagnostic credit. A control board is more, $290 to $560.

Can I keep using the freezer in the meantime?

+

Yes, as long as it's holding 0°F. Move the most perishable fridge items into a cooler with ice until the repair is done.

Does this mean my compressor is going out?

+

Rarely. A cold freezer is good evidence that the compressor and refrigerant are working. The problem is almost always in how the cold air is moved.
