Quick answer
When a gas oven won't heat but the stovetop burners light, the oven igniter is the most likely cause. Most gas ovens use a hot-surface igniter that has to glow hot enough to open the gas valve; as it weakens, it may glow orange but never light the burner. Igniter replacement is a common, reasonably priced repair. If you smell gas, stop and leave the house.
Most gas ovens don't use a pilot light anymore. They use a hot-surface igniter, sometimes called a glow bar. When you turn the oven on, the igniter heats up and draws electric current through the oven's gas safety valve. Only when the current is high enough does the valve open and let gas flow to be lit.
That design is safe, but it has a catch. As the igniter ages, it still glows, so it looks fine, but it no longer pulls enough current to open the valve. The oven sits there with a glowing igniter and no flame. That's why a weak igniter is the most common gas oven repair we do.
Causes, from most to least likely
1.Weak hot-surface igniter
The igniter is a ceramic and silicon-carbide element that gets weaker with use. It still glows, but its resistance rises and it can't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Ignition takes longer and longer until it stops working entirely.
- Check it yourself
- Remove the oven's bottom panel if your manual says it's removable, or look through the broiler drawer or burner slot. Turn on bake and watch. The igniter should glow bright orange, and the burner should light within about a minute and a half. A glow with no flame after that points to a weak igniter.
- The fix · typical $180 – $310
- The igniter is replaced. It's one of the most common oven parts and usually a single-visit repair.
2.Igniter not glowing at all
If there's no glow, the igniter has burned out completely, or it isn't getting power. Ceramic igniters are fragile and crack easily, even from a bump while cleaning.
- Check it yourself
- With the oven cool and the power off, look for cracks or breaks in the igniter. Don't touch it with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten its life.
- The fix · typical $180 – $310
- A cracked igniter is replaced. If it's intact, we check for power from the control.
3.Power out, breaker tripped or control in a lockout mode
Gas ovens with glow-bar igniters need electricity to light. During a power outage the oven won't work, even though the gas is on. Settings like delay start, Sabbath mode or control lock can also stop it from starting.
- Check it yourself
- Make sure the clock and display are on. Reset the breaker or GFCI if needed. Check for lock or timer symbols on the display. Unplugging the range for five minutes resets a frozen control.
- The fix
- No repair when it's a power or settings issue.
4.Spark-ignition oven not sparking
Some gas ovens, mostly newer and pro-style models, use a spark igniter for the oven burner instead of a glow bar. If the spark module or electrode fails, the burner won't light.
- Check it yourself
- Listen for clicking when the oven calls for heat. Clicking with no flame points to a gas supply or burner issue; no clicking points to the spark module or electrode.
- The fix · typical $170 – $300
- A failed spark module or electrode is replaced.
5.Temperature sensor or control board
The control uses the oven sensor to decide when to call for heat. A failed sensor or a control board damaged by a power surge can keep the igniter from ever being powered.
- Check it yourself
- Look for an error code on the display. Check that the sensor probe at the back of the oven isn't bent against the wall.
- The fix · typical $150 – $250
- We test the sensor first, then check for power at the igniter. Boards are model-specific and may need ordering.
6.Failed gas safety valve or regulator
The safety valve opens when the igniter draws enough current. It rarely fails, but when it does, a good igniter won't light the burner. On propane, a converted range or a near-empty tank can also cause problems.
- Check it yourself
- Make sure the stovetop burners light normally, so you know gas is reaching the range. Don't adjust gas fittings yourself.
- The fix
- We test the igniter's current draw first, since a weak igniter is far more common. A failed valve is replaced by a qualified technician and leak-tested.
When to call a technician
Call us if the igniter glows without lighting, doesn't glow at all, or the oven takes a long time to light. Call your gas utility or 911 first if you smell gas. We work on gas ranges and wall ovens across Clearwater, Dunedin and Largo, quote a flat price in writing before we start, and credit the $79 diagnostic to the repair.
45-day parts & labor warranty
Every repair carries a 45-day warranty on the parts we install and on our labor.
What the warranty covers →Common questions
Why do my gas stove burners work but the oven doesn't?
+
The burners and oven have separate igniters and valves. A weak oven igniter is the most common reason the oven won't light while the cooktop works fine.
How long should a gas oven take to light?
+
Usually within about a minute and a half of turning it on. If it's taking longer, or the igniter glows for minutes with no flame, the igniter is getting weak.
Can I use my gas oven during a power outage?
+
Most modern gas ovens can't run without electricity, because the igniter and controls need power. Don't try to light the oven by hand. Check your manual for your model's guidance on the cooktop burners.
Is a weak oven igniter dangerous?
+
The gas safety valve won't open unless the igniter is hot enough, so it's designed to fail safe. But if you notice a lingering gas smell or a loud whoosh when it lights, stop using it and have it checked.
How much does a gas oven igniter cost to replace?
+
Typically $180–$310 total, including the part, labor and the $79 diagnostic credit. It's usually done in one visit.
