GE Oven Error Codes: F1, F2, F3, F4, F7 & F9

GE, GE Profile and Café ovens with electronic controls display an F-code when the control detects a fault. The number tells you which system is affected — the temperature sensor, the control itself, the keypad or the door lock. Power surges after summer storms are a common trigger in Pinellas.

Summary of GE Oven Error Codes
CodeMeaning
F1Control or touch-pad fault — the electronic oven control or keypad is defective.
F2Over-temperature — the oven has gotten hotter than it should.
F3 / F4Oven temperature sensor fault — F3 is an open sensor circuit, F4 a shorted one.
F7Stuck key — the control reads a button as being held down.
F9Door lock circuit fault — usually during or after self-clean.

F1 — Control or touch-pad fault

Control or touch-pad fault — the electronic oven control or keypad is defective.

Common causes

  • Failed oven control board
  • Failed touch pad
  • Surge damage

Try this first

  • Reset the breaker once

When to call: If F1 returns, the control or touch pad needs replacing. We test which one before ordering parts.

F2 — Over-temperature

Over-temperature — the oven has gotten hotter than it should.

Common causes

  • Failed oven temperature sensor
  • Stuck relay on the control board
  • Often appears during self-clean

Try this first

  • Turn the oven off and switch off the breaker
  • Let the oven cool fully before restoring power

When to call: Don't keep using an oven that shows F2 — call us. If the oven keeps heating with the controls off, leave the breaker off.

F3 / F4 — Oven temperature sensor fault

Oven temperature sensor fault — F3 is an open sensor circuit, F4 a shorted one.

Common causes

  • Failed oven temperature sensor
  • Damaged sensor wiring or connector

Try this first

  • Make sure nothing is pressing against the thin sensor probe inside the oven

When to call: Usually the sensor itself — a moderate, single-visit repair.

F7 — Stuck key

Stuck key — the control reads a button as being held down.

Common causes

  • Worn or damaged keypad membrane
  • Moisture under the keypad
  • Loose ribbon cable

Try this first

  • Make sure nothing is leaning on the control panel, then reset the breaker

When to call: If it returns, the keypad (and sometimes the control) needs replacing.

F9 — Door lock circuit fault

Door lock circuit fault — usually during or after self-clean.

Common causes

  • Failed door lock motor or switch
  • Wiring problem
  • Control problem

Try this first

  • Let the oven cool completely, then reset the breaker

When to call: If the door stays locked or F9 returns, the lock assembly needs service. Don't force a locked oven door.

How to reset

Switch off the oven's breaker for at least 1–2 minutes, then turn it back on. If the code clears and stays gone, keep an eye on it. If it returns — especially F2 — stop using the oven until it's checked.

Codes vary by model and year. Check your owner's manual for your exact model — if a code isn't listed here, call us and we'll look it up.
