Quick answer

When a dryer takes too long, restricted airflow is the most common cause: a lint-clogged vent, a crushed transition hose, or a blocked outside vent flap. Clean the lint screen with water, check the vent hood outside, and wipe the moisture sensor bars. If the dryer still runs long with good airflow, a thermostat or heat part may be weak.

A dryer works by moving hot air through the clothes and pushing wet air outside. If the wet air can't get out, clothes stay damp no matter how hot the drum gets.

So before you suspect the dryer, look at the path the air takes. This matters more in condos and townhomes, where vents can run long distances through walls or to the roof. Slow drying is also a fire warning, because lint builds up where airflow is weak.

Safety first: Lint is highly flammable. A dryer that runs very hot, leaves the outside of the cabinet hot, or smells like burning should be turned off until the vent is checked. Unplug the dryer before pulling it out or disconnecting the vent.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Clogged dryer vent

Lint builds up along the vent run, especially at bends and on long runs. Many Clearwater Beach high-rises and Largo condos vent dryers through long shared ducts or roof caps. Building codes generally limit a standard vent to about 35 feet, minus roughly 5 feet for each 90-degree elbow, unless the manufacturer allows more.

    Check it yourself
Go outside while the dryer runs. You should feel a strong flow of warm air at the vent hood, and the flap should open fully. Weak airflow means the vent needs cleaning.
    The fix
Clean the vent. Long, roof-vented or shared condo runs usually need a vent-cleaning company with the right tools.
  2. 2.Crushed or kinked transition hose

The short hose between the dryer and the wall often gets crushed when the dryer is pushed back. White vinyl or thin foil hoses crush easily and trap lint in their ridges.

    Check it yourself
Unplug the dryer and pull it out. Look for flattened sections. Run the dryer briefly with the hose disconnected. If it dries much faster, the vent is the problem.
    The fix
Replace the hose with semi-rigid or rigid metal duct and leave room behind the dryer.
  3. 3.Lint screen coated with residue

Dryer sheets leave a film on the lint screen that you can't see. Air can't pass through, even when the screen looks clean.

    Check it yourself
Run water over the clean lint screen. If water pools instead of passing through, scrub it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then dry it.
    The fix
Wash the screen every few months, and pull the lint off after every load.
  4. 4.Wet clothes from the washer

If the washer isn't spinning fully, clothes go into the dryer much wetter. The dryer then needs far more time. Overloading the dryer has a similar effect.

    Check it yourself
Lift the load from the washer. If it's dripping, the washer may have a spin problem. Dry smaller loads to see if drying time improves.
    The fix
Fix the washer spin, or dry smaller loads. Our washer-not-spinning guide can help.
  5. 5.Dirty moisture sensor bars

Many dryers stop when metal sensor bars inside the drum detect dry clothes. Fabric softener and dryer sheet residue coats them and confuses the sensor. The dryer may end early with damp clothes, or run longer than it should.

    Check it yourself
Find two metal strips inside the drum, usually near the lint screen. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth.
    The fix
Cleaning usually works. If not, the sensor or the control may need to be checked.
  6. 6.Thermostat cycling heat off too early

A worn cycling thermostat can shut off heat at a lower temperature than it should. The dryer runs, but with less heat, so drying takes longer.

    Check it yourself
Hard to confirm without test equipment. If airflow is strong and clothes are still slow to dry, the heat cycle needs testing.
    The fix · typical $130 – $220
The thermostat is replaced after testing.
  7. 7.Gas valve coils weakening (gas dryers)

On gas dryers, worn valve coils can fail after the dryer warms up. The burner lights, then goes out and doesn't relight, so the dryer tumbles without heat for part of the cycle.

    Check it yourself
Watch the burner window during a long cycle. If the flame stops and doesn't relight while the dryer is still running, this is likely the cause.
    The fix · typical $170 – $300
The valve coils are replaced, usually as a set.

When to call a technician

Call us if airflow at the outside vent is strong and the dryer still takes multiple cycles, if the dryer gets very hot, or if you smell burning. We'll test the heat circuit, clean lint from inside the cabinet while it's open, and tell you honestly if the vent run needs a dedicated vent cleaner.

Common questions

How long should a dryer take to dry a load?

+

Most normal loads dry in about 40 to 60 minutes. If yours regularly takes longer, or needs a second cycle, airflow is the first thing to check.

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

+

At least once a year for most homes. Long condo runs and heavy-use households, like rentals, may need it more often.

Can a clogged vent cause a fire?

+

Yes. Lint is highly flammable, and a blocked vent traps heat. Slow drying, very hot clothes and a burning smell are warning signs.

Why does my new dryer take so long to dry?

+

If the dryer is new, the problem is almost always the vent. A new dryer connected to an old, clogged vent will dry just as slowly as the old one did.

What kind of dryer vent hose is best?

+

Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Avoid white vinyl and thin foil, which crush easily and trap lint.
