Whirlpool Dryer Error Codes: AF, F3E1, F3E2, PF & More
Whirlpool dryers — and many Maytag dryers built on the same platforms — use the same 'F#E#' format as Whirlpool washers. Whirlpool's own guidance is that most F#E# codes mean the control has detected a problem that needs service, but a few codes, like AF and PF, point to things you can check yourself.
Restricted airflow — the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked or has too many turns.
F3E1
Exhaust thermistor error — the sensor that reads the exhaust air temperature is open or shorted.
F3E2
Moisture sensor error — the moisture sensor bars inside the drum aren't reading properly.
F1E1
Main control error — the electronic control board has detected an internal fault.
L2
Low or no line voltage — there may be a problem with the home's power supply.
PF
Power failure — the drying cycle was interrupted by a power outage.
AF / F4E3 — Restricted airflow
Restricted airflow — the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked or has too many turns.
Common causes
Full lint screen
Lint-packed vent duct
Crushed foil or vinyl vent behind the dryer
Blocked outside vent hood
Try this first
✓Clean the lint screen
✓Straighten or replace a crushed vent hose
✓Check the outside flap opens when the dryer runs
✓Touch any key to dismiss the code
When to call: If airflow is still weak with a clean screen, the vent run needs a full cleaning. Restricted airflow is the most common reason Whirlpool dryers stop heating.
F3E1 — Exhaust thermistor error
Exhaust thermistor error — the sensor that reads the exhaust air temperature is open or shorted.
Common causes
Failed exhaust thermistor
Damaged wiring or connector
Heat damage from a restricted vent
Try this first
✓Reset the dryer once and check the vent is clear
When to call: Needs a technician to test the thermistor and its wiring.
F3E2 — Moisture sensor error
Moisture sensor error — the moisture sensor bars inside the drum aren't reading properly.
Common causes
Dryer-sheet or fabric-softener residue on the sensor bars
Failed sensor or wiring
Try this first
✓Wipe the metal sensor bars inside the drum (usually near the lint screen) with a little rubbing alcohol or a damp cloth
When to call: If clean bars don't clear it, the sensor or its harness needs testing.
F1E1 — Main control error
Main control error — the electronic control board has detected an internal fault.
Common causes
Failed main control board
Power surge damage
Try this first
✓Unplug for 1 minute and restart once
When to call: If it returns, the control board needs replacing. We confirm it's the board — not a wiring or power issue — before ordering one.
L2 — Low or no line voltage
Low or no line voltage — there may be a problem with the home's power supply.
Common causes
Tripped half of a 240V breaker or blown fuse
Loose power-cord connection
Outlet or household wiring problem
Try this first
✓Check and reset the dryer's breaker
✓Try a timed dry cycle
When to call: If the breaker is fine and L2 persists, Whirlpool recommends having an electrician check the power supply.
PF — Power failure
Power failure — the drying cycle was interrupted by a power outage.
Common causes
Outage or brief power interruption
Try this first
✓Touch and hold Start to restart the cycle, or press Power to clear the display
When to call: No service needed.
How to reset
Unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) for 1 minute, then restore power and start a timed dry cycle. After a power outage, touch and hold Start to resume the cycle.
