Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Codes: F9E1, F8E4, F6E4, H2O & More

Whirlpool dishwashers report faults in the same 'F#E#' format as Whirlpool laundry. Models with a display show the code directly. Models without one blink the Clean light: count the first set of flashes (the F number), wait for the short pause, then count the second set (the E number). Seven flashes, a pause and one flash means F7E1.

F9E1 — Long drain

Long drain — the dishwasher took too long to drain or isn't draining.

Common causes

  • Clogged filter
  • Kinked or clogged drain hose
  • Clogged garbage disposal or its knockout plug
  • Blocked air gap
  • Failed drain pump

Try this first

  • Clean the filter
  • Check the drain hose for kinks
  • Run the disposal
  • Clean the air gap on the sink, if you have one

When to call: If everything is clear and it still won't drain, the drain pump likely needs replacing.

F8E4 — Water detected in the drip tray (base)

Water detected in the drip tray (base).

Common causes

  • Leaking water-line connection
  • Leaking pump, hose or door seal
  • Excess suds

Try this first

  • Check the water connections under the dishwasher for drips
  • Use only dishwasher detergent

When to call: Turn the water off under the sink and call — a hidden leak can ruin cabinets and flooring.

F6E4 — Overfill or float problem

Overfill or float problem — the float switch is reporting too much water.

Common causes

  • Dishwasher not level
  • Float stuck or blocked by debris
  • Inlet valve not closing
  • Too many suds

Try this first

  • Make sure the float (in the front corner of the tub) moves freely and clicks
  • Check the dishwasher is level

When to call: If the float is free and the code returns, the inlet valve or float switch needs service.

F7E2 — Wash motor error

Wash motor error.

Common causes

  • Wash motor fault
  • Wiring or control problem

Try this first

  • Power-cycle the dishwasher

When to call: If the code reappears, the motor needs testing.

F6E1 — User interface / main control communication error

User interface / main control communication error.

Common causes

  • Loose connection between the control panel and main board
  • Failed control

Try this first

  • Power-cycle the dishwasher

When to call: If it returns, the control or wiring needs a technician.

H2O — No water detected

No water detected.

Common causes

  • Water supply valve closed
  • Kinked supply hose
  • Failed inlet valve

Try this first

  • Make sure the supply valve under the sink is fully open
  • Check the supply hose for kinks

When to call: If water is on and it still won't fill, the inlet valve likely needs replacing.

How to reset

Disconnect power for 30 seconds — unplug a corded dishwasher, or switch off the breaker for a hard-wired one — then restore power and start a new cycle.
