Quick answer
Dishwasher leaks usually come from suds from the wrong soap, a worn or dirty door gasket, a loose hose connection, or a dishwasher that isn't level. Stop running it, shut off the water valve under the sink, and note exactly where the water shows up. Leaks from under the machine often mean a failed pump seal or a cracked inlet valve.
A leaking dishwasher is worth stopping right away. Water under a dishwasher soaks into the subfloor and cabinet base long before you see it. In a condo, it can reach the unit below, which turns a small repair into an insurance claim and a call from your building manager.
Where the water appears is the best clue. Water at the front edge of the door is usually a gasket, loading or suds issue. Water from underneath, or a puddle that appears when the dishwasher isn't running, points to a hose, valve or pump.
Causes, from most to least likely
1.Dish soap or too much detergent
Hand dish soap in a dishwasher makes a mountain of suds that push out past the door seal. Even pre-rinsing dishes with a lot of dish soap can do it. Overdosing dishwasher detergent can foam too.
- Check it yourself
- Open the door mid-cycle. If you see foam, that's your answer. Make sure nobody filled the dispenser with dish soap.
- The fix
- Wipe out as much foam as you can, then run a rinse cycle and repeat until the suds are gone. No part needed.
2.Worn or dirty door gasket
The rubber gasket around the tub opening seals the door. Over time it hardens, tears or gets coated in grease and food, and water seeps past it.
- Check it yourself
- Run a finger along the gasket. Look for tears, flat spots or grime. Wipe it clean with warm soapy water. Make sure it's fully seated in its channel.
- The fix
- A damaged gasket is replaced. On most models it presses into a channel and is a quick job.
3.Loading that sprays water out the door
A large pan, cutting board or tray on the bottom rack can deflect the spray arm's water straight at the top of the door, where the seal is weakest.
- Check it yourself
- Notice whether leaks happen only on loads with big pans. Load large items along the sides or back, not near the door.
- The fix
- Change the loading. If the leak continues with a normal load, look at the other causes.
4.Dishwasher not level or door not closing tight
If the dishwasher tilts forward, water collects against the door. Worn door hinges or springs can also keep the door from pressing evenly against the gasket.
- Check it yourself
- Put a level on the open door or inside the tub. Watch whether the door closes evenly and latches firmly. A door that drops open hard or won't stay put has a hinge or spring issue.
- The fix
- We adjust the leveling legs and check that the dishwasher is secured to the counter. Broken door springs or hinge parts are replaced.
5.Loose hose connection or cracked water inlet valve
The water supply line connects to the inlet valve under the front of the dishwasher. A loose fitting or a hairline crack in the plastic valve body drips during every fill. The drain hose connection at the disposal or pump can also loosen.
- Check it yourself
- With the breaker off, remove the lower kick panel (usually two screws). Use a flashlight to look for drips or mineral trails at the inlet valve and hose clamps. Check the hose connections under the sink too.
- The fix · typical $150 – $250
- Loose fittings are tightened or replaced. A cracked inlet valve is replaced.
6.Failed pump seal or sump leak
The pump and sump sit in the bottom of the tub with rubber seals around them. As seals age, water seeps past and drips under the dishwasher. Many models, including Bosch, have a base pan with a float switch that stops the cycle when it detects water — Bosch shows E15.
- Check it yourself
- A leak from the center underneath, with no foam or gasket issue, points here. If your dishwasher shows a leak-detection code, the base pan has caught water.
- The fix · typical $260 – $450
- On many dishwashers the seal is part of the pump assembly, so the pump is replaced. We find the exact leak point before quoting.
7.Cracked tub
Less common, but a crack in the tub floor or side lets water escape. It happens on older units and after something heavy is dropped inside.
- Check it yourself
- Look for cracks around the heater mounts and sump. If you find one in the tub itself, stop using the dishwasher.
- The fix
- Some leaks at seals and mounting points are repairable. A cracked tub usually isn't, and we'll tell you so before you spend money.
When to call a technician
Call us if the leak continues after you've ruled out suds, the gasket and loading, or if water shows up underneath the dishwasher. In condos, call sooner rather than later — a slow drip can reach the unit below before you know about it. If your building requires a vendor insurance certificate, we can send one ahead. We find the source, quote a flat price in writing, and credit the $79 diagnostic to the repair.
45-day parts & labor warranty
Every repair carries a 45-day warranty on the parts we install and on our labor.
What the warranty covers →Common questions
Is a leaking dishwasher an emergency?
+
Turn it off and close the supply valve, and it's no longer an emergency. Don't keep running it. Hidden water under a dishwasher can rot the subfloor and, in a condo, damage the unit below.
Why does my dishwasher leak only sometimes?
+
Intermittent leaks often come from loading (a pan deflecting spray onto the door), occasional suds, or a valve that drips only during fills. Note which cycle and which load it happens on.
What does a leak-detection error mean?
+
Many dishwashers have a float in the base pan. When water collects there, the float rises and the dishwasher stops and pumps out to prevent a flood. Drying the pan clears the code, but the leak needs to be found or it will return.
Should I put a leak sensor under my dishwasher?
+
It's a good idea, especially in condos and second-floor kitchens. A battery-powered water sensor costs little and alerts you at the first drop.
How much does a dishwasher leak repair cost?
+
It depends on the source. A cracked inlet valve runs $150–$250, and a pump with a failed seal $260–$450, including the $79 diagnostic credit. Gasket and hose fixes are often less. You'll see the price before work starts.
Can water from a dishwasher leak cause mold?
+
Yes. In a humid climate, water trapped under cabinets and flooring can start growing mold within a day or two. Dry the area thoroughly and have the leak fixed promptly.
