Quick answer
Most Bosch dishwashers that won't drain have clogged filters or debris jammed under the drain pump cover in the sump. Remove the filters, pry off the pump cover with a spoon as Bosch's own instructions describe, and clear anything stuck by the impeller. If the code is E24, check the drain hose and disposal connection; if the pump is clear and still won't run, it has likely failed.
Bosch is one of the most common dishwasher brands in Clearwater-area kitchens, and drain problems are the issue owners ask about most. Bosch dishwashers have a few design details that make them a bit different from other brands, including a removable pump cover you can reach from inside the tub.
Bosch flags drain trouble with two codes. E24 generally points to the drain hose or the connection at the sink. E25 generally points to the drain pump or its cover. Our Bosch error code guide covers those codes in more detail. Even without a code, the steps below apply.
Causes, from most to least likely
1.Clogged filter system
Bosch uses a multi-part filter: a cylindrical fine filter that twists out, plus a flat microfilter under it. Food and grease on these slow or stop the flow to the pump.
- Check it yourself
- Remove the bottom rack. Turn the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift it out with the flat filter. Separate the parts and rinse them under warm running water with a soft brush. Reinstall and turn until it locks; the arrow marks usually line up.
- The fix
- Cleaning fixes most cases. Bosch recommends checking the filters regularly — every few weeks is a good habit.
2.Debris under the pump cover (often E25)
With the filters out, you'll see a small plastic cover in the sump. Under it is the drain pump impeller. Glass, pits, bones and plastic tags get past the filter and jam the impeller.
- Check it yourself
- With the dishwasher unplugged and filters removed, bail out the water. Pry the pump cover up with a spoon until it clicks, then pull it up and forward. Remove any debris you see carefully. The impeller should turn freely by hand. Snap the cover back in place firmly — a loose cover can trigger E25 by itself.
- The fix · typical $170 – $290
- If the impeller is clear and turns freely but the pump still doesn't run, the pump is tested and replaced if needed.
3.Drain hose kinked or disposal connection blocked (often E24)
Bosch dishwashers are often installed tight against cabinets. The drain hose can kink when the unit is slid in. A new disposal with its knockout plug still in place, or a clogged disposal, stops the water at the sink end.
- Check it yourself
- Run the garbage disposal. Look under the sink for kinks and make sure the hose rises up toward the bottom of the counter before dropping to the drain. If the disposal is new, check whether the knockout was removed.
- The fix · typical $120 – $190
- A kinked or clogged hose is cleared or replaced, and the high loop restored. A plumber or we can remove a leftover disposal knockout.
4.Stuck check valve
A one-way valve near the pump outlet stops dirty water from flowing back into the tub. If it sticks, it can block draining or let water slide back in after the cycle.
- Check it yourself
- Not easy to reach without pulling the dishwasher. Suspect it if the filters and pump are clear and water still returns.
- The fix · typical $170 – $290
- The valve is cleaned or replaced. On some models it's part of the pump housing.
5.Failed drain pump
The pump motor can wear out with age. A pump that's silent when it should drain, or hums weakly with a clear impeller, has usually failed.
- Check it yourself
- Start a short cycle and cancel it. Most Bosch models drain on cancel. Listen near the bottom of the machine. Silence or a weak hum with nothing moving points to the pump.
- The fix · typical $170 – $290
- We test the pump for power and resistance and replace it. Bosch drain pumps are common parts and often available quickly.
6.Control or wiring fault
If the pump is good but gets no power, the control module or a wire between them is at fault. Surge damage after a lightning storm is one cause.
- Check it yourself
- Not a homeowner test. Note any code shown and when it appeared.
- The fix · typical $260 – $480
- We test for power at the pump before replacing a control. Bosch control modules can be costly, so we confirm before quoting.
When to call a technician
Call us if you've cleaned the filters, cleared the pump cover and checked the hose, and the dishwasher still holds water or keeps showing E24 or E25. We're an independent shop, not Bosch-authorized, so if your dishwasher is still under Bosch's warranty, contact Bosch first. Out of warranty, we'll diagnose it, give you a written price and credit the $79 diagnostic to the repair.
45-day parts & labor warranty
Every repair carries a 45-day warranty on the parts we install and on our labor.
What the warranty covers →Common questions
Is it normal for a Bosch dishwasher to have water in the bottom?
+
A small amount in the sump under the filter is normal and keeps the seals from drying out. Water across the tub floor is not.
How do I make my Bosch dishwasher drain manually?
+
Press and hold Start/Reset (on many models) for about 3 seconds to cancel and drain. Your manual lists the exact button. If it won't drain on cancel, check the filters and pump cover.
What's the difference between Bosch E24 and E25?
+
E24 generally means water isn't leaving through the drain hose — a kink, clog or blocked disposal connection. E25 generally means the drain pump is blocked or its cover isn't seated. Both can show up from the same clog.
Can I replace a Bosch drain pump myself?
+
It's possible on some models, but it usually means pulling the dishwasher out and tipping it, with water still inside. Many homeowners prefer to have it done.
How much does a Bosch dishwasher drain repair cost?
+
Clearing a clog typically runs $120–$190 and a drain pump $170–$290, including the $79 diagnostic credit. You get the exact price in writing first.
