Quick answer

When a dishwasher won't start, check that the door is fully latched, the control lock or delay start isn't on, and power is reaching it — a tripped GFCI or breaker is common. If the display is still dead, a failed door latch switch, thermal fuse or control board is the usual cause. Control boards often fail after lightning storms.

A dishwasher that won't start is often not broken at all. A child lock, a delay timer or a tripped outlet stops it cold, and the display doesn't always tell you why.

Start with what the display is doing. Lights on but nothing happens points to the latch, a setting or the control. Completely dark points to power, a fuse or a failed board.

Safety first: Dishwashers are hard-wired or plugged in under the sink, close to water. Turn off the breaker before removing any panel or touching wiring.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Control lock, child lock or delay start

Most dishwashers have a control lock that ignores button presses. Delay start can be set by accident, so the dishwasher is waiting hours to begin. Both look like a dead machine.

    Check it yourself
Look for a lock or key symbol, or a countdown on the display. Your manual lists how to cancel each — often by holding one button for 3 to 5 seconds. Press Cancel or Reset and try again.
    The fix
No repair needed. If the control won't respond to any button, the keypad or board may be at fault (see below).
  2. 2.Door not fully latched

The dishwasher won't run unless the door switch confirms the door is closed. A dish or rack wheel sticking out, a bent latch or a worn strike stops the switch from closing.

    Check it yourself
Push the racks fully in and close the door firmly. Listen for a click. On many top-control models, you select a cycle and then close the door to start it — make sure you're doing it in that order.
    The fix · typical $150 – $260
A worn latch or failed door switch is replaced. It's one of the most common dishwasher repairs.
  3. 3.No power: GFCI, breaker or wall switch

Dishwashers are often plugged into an outlet under the sink, sometimes protected by a GFCI, and sometimes sharing a circuit with the disposal. In some kitchens the dishwasher is wired through a wall switch next to the disposal switch.

    Check it yourself
Reset any GFCI outlet in the kitchen. Check the breaker panel for a tripped dishwasher or kitchen breaker. Flip any unlabeled wall switch near the sink. Make sure the plug under the sink is pushed in.
    The fix
If a breaker or GFCI keeps tripping, there may be a wiring fault or a shorted part in the dishwasher. Stop resetting it and have it checked.
  4. 4.Power-glitch lockup

Electronic controls can freeze after a brief outage or a surge. The display may show nothing or a random code.

    Check it yourself
Turn off the dishwasher's breaker for one to two minutes, then turn it back on. This reset fixes a surprising number of no-start problems.
    The fix
If it comes back but freezes again, the board may be damaged and is tested next.
  5. 5.Blown thermal fuse

Some dishwashers have a thermal fuse on or near the control board. It opens if the control overheats, cutting power to the display. It doesn't reset on its own.

    Check it yourself
Not something to check yourself without electrical training. A completely dead display with good power at the outlet is the clue.
    The fix · typical $260 – $480
We test the fuse and look for the reason it blew. On some models the fuse is part of the control board, so the board is replaced.
  6. 6.Failed control board or touchpad

The control board runs every function. Power surges, especially during summer lightning season in Pinellas, are a leading cause of board failure. Steam can also damage the touchpad membrane over time.

    Check it yourself
Note any error codes. If the display lights but some buttons don't respond, the touchpad is the likely part.
    The fix · typical $260 – $480
We test for power in and out of the board before replacing anything. Touchpads and boards are model-specific and sometimes need to be ordered, typically 1–3 business days.
  7. 7.Failed wash motor or wiring fault

If the display shows the dishwasher is running but nothing happens, the wash motor may not be starting. A loose or burned wire at the junction box can also cut power.

    Check it yourself
Listen for a hum with no water movement. Don't open the junction box yourself.
    The fix · typical $260 – $450
We check the wiring and test the motor. A failed wash pump motor is replaced.

When to call a technician

Call us if the dishwasher still won't start after checking the locks, latch, GFCI and breaker, or if a breaker trips when it runs. A dead display after a storm almost always needs a board test. We test before replacing parts, quote in writing first, and credit the $79 diagnostic toward the repair.

Common questions

How do I reset my dishwasher?

+

Turn off its breaker for one to two minutes and turn it back on. Many models also have a Cancel or Reset button you hold for a few seconds. Your manual lists the exact steps.

Why does my dishwasher beep but not start?

+

Usually the door isn't fully latched, or the control lock is on. Close the door firmly and check the display for a lock symbol.

Can a lightning storm damage my dishwasher?

+

Yes. Surges can damage the control board even when the storm doesn't trip a breaker. A whole-home surge protector at the panel is the best protection for appliances with electronic controls.

Is it worth fixing a dishwasher with a bad control board?

+

On a mid-range or higher model under about 10 years old, usually yes. On an entry-level dishwasher that's older, the board can approach the cost of a new unit, and we'll tell you that up front.

My dishwasher is still under warranty. Should I call you?

+

Call the manufacturer first. We're an independent shop, not factory-authorized for any brand. In-warranty repairs should go to them at no cost to you.
