KitchenAid Dishwasher Error Codes: F9E1, F8E4, F7E2 & H2O

KitchenAid dishwashers are built by Whirlpool Corporation and use its 'F#E#' fault codes. Models with a display show the code; models without one blink a light in a pattern — count the first group of flashes for the F number and the second group for the E number. Here are the codes KitchenAid owners in Pinellas ask us about most.

F9E1 — Long drain

Long drain — the dishwasher isn't draining, or is draining too slowly.

Common causes

  • Filter clogged with food and hard-water scale
  • Kinked drain hose
  • Disposal clogged or knockout plug not removed
  • Blocked air gap
  • Failed drain pump

Try this first

  • Twist out and rinse the filter
  • Check the drain hose under the sink
  • Run the disposal and clear the air gap if you have one

When to call: A humming dishwasher that won't drain with a clean filter usually needs a drain pump.

F8E4 — Water detected in the drip tray under the tub

Water detected in the drip tray under the tub.

Common causes

  • Loose or leaking water-line connection
  • Leaking pump, hose or door gasket
  • Oversudsing

Try this first

  • Look for drips at the supply connection behind the kick plate
  • Use only dishwasher detergent

When to call: Built-in dishwashers can leak quietly into cabinets and subfloors — shut the water off and have it checked.

F7E2 — Wash motor error

Wash motor error.

Common causes

  • Wash motor fault
  • Wiring or control problem

Try this first

  • Power-cycle the dishwasher once

When to call: If F7E2 reappears, the wash motor needs testing.

F6E1 — User interface / main control error

User interface / main control error.

Common causes

  • Loose connection between the control panel and main board
  • Failed control

Try this first

  • Power-cycle the dishwasher once

When to call: A recurring F6E1 needs a technician to check the wiring and controls.

H2O — Not detecting water

Not detecting water.

Common causes

  • Supply valve closed (common after plumbing work)
  • Kinked supply hose
  • Failed inlet valve

Try this first

  • Open the supply valve under the sink fully
  • Check the hose isn't kinked behind the dishwasher

When to call: If water is on and it still won't fill, the inlet valve likely needs replacing.

How to reset

Cut power for 30 seconds — unplug a corded unit, or switch off the breaker for a hard-wired one — then restore power. If the same code returns, the fault is still there.

Codes vary by model and year. Check your owner's manual for your exact model — if a code isn't listed here, call us and we'll look it up.
