Quick answer

If the dryer runs but the drum won't turn, a broken or slipped drive belt is the most common cause. A seized idler pulley or worn drum rollers can also stop the drum. If you hear the motor hum but nothing turns, the motor or something jamming the blower may be the problem.

A dryer drum that won't spin is usually a mechanical problem, not an electrical one. The motor, belt, pulley and rollers all work together to turn the drum.

Listen to what the dryer does when you press Start. A motor that runs freely, a hum with no movement, or complete silence each point to different causes. Then, with the dryer unplugged, feel how the drum turns by hand. Too loose, too stiff or normal is the single most useful clue on this list.

Safety first: Unplug the dryer before turning the drum by hand or removing panels. Don't keep pressing Start if the motor hums, because it can overheat the motor.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Broken or slipped drive belt

The belt wraps around the drum and the motor pulley. Over time it cracks, stretches and breaks. When it breaks, the motor runs but the drum doesn't move.

    Check it yourself
With the power cord pulled, rotate the drum with your hand. If it spins very easily with no resistance, the belt is likely broken. When the front or top panel comes off, the old belt is often lying under the drum.
    The fix · typical $140 – $230
The belt is replaced, and the idler pulley and rollers are checked.
  2. 2.Seized or broken idler pulley

The idler pulley keeps tension on the belt. If its bearing seizes, the belt can slip or break. If its spring breaks, the belt goes slack.

    Check it yourself
The pulley sits inside the cabinet, so look for clues instead. A squealing noise before the drum stopped points here.
    The fix · typical $190 – $320
The pulley is replaced, usually with a new belt.
  3. 3.Seized drum rollers

If a roller seizes, the drum drags and can stop or wear through the belt. Thumping or scraping before the drum stopped is a common clue.

    Check it yourself
With the dryer unplugged, try turning the drum. If it's very stiff or grinds, the rollers may be seized.
    The fix · typical $190 – $320
The rollers are replaced, often with the idler pulley.
  4. 4.Motor hums but won't turn

If you hear a hum but the drum doesn't move, the motor's start winding or centrifugal switch may have failed. A jammed blower or seized drum can also stop the motor.

    Check it yourself
Stop pressing Start. Pull the plug, then rotate the drum. If it turns with normal resistance, the motor is likely the problem.
    The fix · typical $280 – $460
The motor is replaced after the blower and drum are ruled out.
  5. 5.Jammed blower wheel

A sock, a small item or a buildup of lint can jam the blower wheel, which runs on the same motor shaft as the drum. A jammed blower can stop the motor.

    Check it yourself
Remove the lint screen and look into the slot with a flashlight for objects. Keep your hands out unless the dryer is unplugged.
    The fix
The blower housing is opened and cleared. The blower wheel is replaced if it's damaged.
  6. 6.Thermal fuse or door switch (nothing runs)

If nothing happens at all, not even a hum, the problem may be before the motor. On Whirlpool-built dryers, a blown thermal fuse stops the motor. A failed door switch also prevents starting.

    Check it yourself
Close the door firmly and check the vent airflow outside. See our dryer-won't-start guide for more detail.
    The fix · typical $130 – $220
The thermal fuse or door switch is replaced, and the vent is checked.
  7. 7.Control board or timer

The control sends power to the motor. A failed relay can stop the motor from running even when everything else is fine.

    Check it yourself
We check this last, once the belt, rollers, motor and fuses test good.
    The fix · typical $250 – $480
We test the control before quoting a replacement.

Common questions

Why is my dryer running but the drum not turning?

+

A broken belt is the most common cause. Turn the drum by hand with the dryer unplugged. If it spins very easily, the belt is likely broken.

Can I replace a dryer belt myself?

+

Many handy homeowners can. It involves opening the cabinet and threading the belt around the drum and idler pulley. Check the rollers and pulley while you're there.

What does it mean if my dryer hums but doesn't turn?

+

The motor may be failing, or something may be jamming the drum or blower. Stop pressing Start and have it checked.

How long does a dryer belt last?

+

It depends on use and load size. Overloading and worn rollers or pulleys shorten belt life.

Is it worth fixing a dryer drum that won't turn?

+

Generally, yes. Belts, pulleys and rollers are inexpensive repairs. Even a motor is often worth it on a dryer in good condition.

Will a dryer heat if the drum isn't turning?

+

It can. On a dryer without a belt switch, a broken belt lets the motor keep running, and the heat can stay on too. Clothes resting in one spot near the heat outlet can scorch, so turn the dryer off as soon as you notice the drum has stopped. Don't keep running cycles hoping it will start turning again.
