Quick answer

Dryer noise usually comes from worn drum rollers (thumping), a worn idler pulley (squealing), or worn drum glides or felt seals (scraping). Rattling is often coins, shells or buttons in the drum or the blower. Most noise repairs are inexpensive if caught before the worn part damages other parts.

Dryers get noisy as their moving parts wear. The good news is that each sound points to a different part, so describing the noise helps us bring the right part.

Listen for the type of sound and when it happens, at startup or throughout the cycle. Run the dryer empty for a minute too. If the noise disappears, something in the load was causing it. If it stays, use the list below to narrow it down. A short phone video of the sound is genuinely useful when you book.

Safety first: Unplug the dryer before reaching into the drum or opening the cabinet. If a noise comes with a burning smell or smoke, stop the dryer and don't use it until it's checked.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Objects in the drum or blower (rattling)

Coins, keys, buttons, zippers and shells from beach shorts often rattle in the drum. Small items can slip past the lint screen into the blower housing, where they rattle loudly and can crack the blower wheel.

    Check it yourself
Empty pockets and check the drum. Remove the lint screen and look into the slot with a flashlight. Don't reach in with the dryer plugged in.
    The fix
Remove the item. If it reached the blower, the blower housing is opened to clear it, and the blower wheel is checked for damage.
  2. 2.Worn drum rollers (thumping or rumbling)

Many dryers rest the drum on two or four rubber rollers. As they wear, they develop flat spots or worn axles, causing a rhythmic thump or rumble. Heavy loads and daily use, as in busy family homes and rental units, wear them faster.

    Check it yourself
Run the dryer empty. A steady thump or rumble that comes with each drum turn suggests the rollers.
    The fix · typical $190 – $320
Rollers are replaced as a set, usually with the idler pulley, since they wear together.
  3. 3.Worn idler pulley (squealing)

The idler pulley keeps the belt tight. Its bearing wears and starts to squeal, often loudest when the dryer first starts.

    Check it yourself
Listen at startup. A high-pitched squeal that changes as the dryer warms up is often the idler pulley.
    The fix · typical $190 – $320
The pulley is replaced, and the rollers are checked at the same time.
  4. 4.Worn drum glides or felt seal (scraping)

Some dryers support the front of the drum on plastic glides and use felt seals at the front and back. When they wear, metal rubs on metal, causing scraping and sometimes black marks on clothes.

    Check it yourself
Look at the front edge of the drum for wear. Black marks or lint along the seam point to a worn glide or seal.
    The fix
The glides and felt seals are replaced.
  5. 5.Worn or frayed drive belt (flapping or thumping)

A belt that is frayed, cracked or stretched can slap against the drum or slip on the motor pulley.

    Check it yourself
It's hard to see without opening the cabinet. A light thump once per drum rotation can point to the belt.
    The fix · typical $140 – $230
The belt is replaced, usually with the idler pulley if it's worn.
  6. 6.Loose or damaged blower wheel (loud rattle or roar)

The blower wheel pushes air out the vent. If it comes loose or a blade breaks, it rattles or roars and can reduce airflow.

    Check it yourself
If rattling continues after you empty the drum and check the lint screen slot, the blower may be loose or broken.
    The fix
The blower wheel is tightened or replaced.
  7. 7.Worn motor bearings (grinding or humming)

The motor has bearings that wear over time. A worn bearing can cause grinding or a loud hum.

    Check it yourself
A tech confirms this by spinning the motor with the belt off. If the noise remains after the rollers, pulley and belt are ruled out, the motor bearings may be the cause.
    The fix · typical $280 – $460
    The motor is replaced.

When to call a technician

Common questions

Why is my dryer squeaking?

+

A squeak or squeal is most often the idler pulley or worn drum rollers. Drum glides and felt seals can also squeak.

Why is my dryer thumping?

+

Usually worn drum rollers with flat spots. Bulky items like sneakers can also thump. Run the dryer empty to see if the noise is still there.

Is a noisy dryer dangerous?

+

Usually not right away. Grinding with a burning smell is a reason to stop it, though. Any noise that keeps getting worse should be checked soon.

Should I replace rollers and the idler pulley together?

+

Often, yes. They wear at similar rates, and the dryer is already open. It saves a second visit later.

Is it worth fixing a noisy dryer?

+

Yes, in the large majority of cases. Rollers, pulleys and belts are inexpensive parts compared with a new dryer.

Why is my stacked dryer so loud?

+

Stacked and compact dryers in condos use the same rollers, pulleys and belts as full-size models, just in a tighter cabinet, so worn parts are easier to hear through walls. Also check that the stacking kit is tight. A loose kit lets the dryer rattle against the washer below it.
