Quick answer

A front-load washer keeps the door locked for a few minutes after a cycle, and it won't unlock while water remains in the drum. Wait a few minutes, then drain any water and unplug the washer for a minute to reset it. If the door stays locked after that, the door lock assembly or the control has likely failed.

A locked door with your clothes inside is stressful, but don't force it. The lock is there to keep the door shut while the drum spins or holds water. Forcing it can break the handle, the hinge or the lock itself.

Most stuck doors release with patience and a few simple steps. If yours doesn't, the causes below explain why and what a repair involves.

Safety first: Don't pry the door open with a screwdriver. Unplug the washer before using any emergency release. Make sure the drum is completely drained and stopped first, or water will rush out onto the floor.

Causes, from most to least likely

  1. 1.Normal delay after the cycle

Many front-load door locks release a short time after the cycle ends, often one to three minutes. Some use a heated element in the lock that must cool before it releases. Hot washes can take longer.

    Check it yourself
Wait five minutes after the cycle ends and listen for a click. Check that the display says the cycle is finished, not paused.
    The fix
No repair. The door unlocks on its own once the lock is ready.
  2. 2.Water left in the drum

The washer won't unlock while it senses water above the door line. A clogged drain filter, kinked hose or failed pump leaves water in the drum and keeps the door locked.

    Check it yourself
Look through the glass for standing water. Unplug the washer, then drain it through the filter access at the bottom front. Many models have a small drain tube there.
    The fix · typical $170 – $290
Clearing the clog drains the water and the door unlocks. A failed drain pump is replaced.
  3. 3.Cycle paused, not cancelled

Pressing Pause doesn't always unlock the door, especially when the water level is high or the water is hot. Some models need you to cancel and select drain and spin first.

    Check it yourself
Press Power off, then on, and run a drain-and-spin cycle. Wait a few minutes after it finishes.
    The fix
No repair. Running drain and spin usually clears it.
  4. 4.Control needs a reset

A power blip or a control glitch can leave the lock engaged. Cutting power gives the control a fresh start.

    Check it yourself
Unplug the washer, or turn off its breaker, for at least one minute. Plug it back in and try the door. Some models need you to press Power and then wait.
    The fix
If the door opens after a reset and the problem doesn't return, nothing else is needed.
  5. 5.Failed door lock assembly

Door locks wear out, especially in households and rentals that run many loads. The mechanism can stick in the locked position or the switch can fail, so the control never sees the door unlock. In rare cases, a broken plastic latch hook on the door does the same.

    Check it yourself
Some washers have an emergency release cord or tab behind the bottom access panel or the drain-filter door. Check your manual for its location, unplug the washer, and pull it gently once the drum is empty.
    The fix · typical $160 – $280
The door lock is replaced and tested through a full cycle. If the latch hook on the door is broken, it's replaced too.
  6. 6.Control board not releasing the lock

The control sends the signal to unlock. A failed relay on the board can keep the lock powered or never send the release.

    Check it yourself
There's nothing to test here without a meter. If the door stays locked after draining, a reset and a new lock, the control is the likely cause.
    The fix · typical $280 – $520
We test the lock circuit before quoting a board.

Common questions

How long does it take for a washer door to unlock?

+

Usually one to three minutes after the cycle ends. Some models take a little longer after a hot wash.

How do I open a locked front-load washer door?

+

Wait a few minutes. Run a drain-and-spin if there's water inside. Unplug the washer for a minute to reset it. If your model has an emergency release, use it only with the washer unplugged and the drum empty.

Why is my washer door locked with water inside?

+

The washer won't unlock while water could spill out. Something is stopping it from draining, most often a clogged filter, a kinked hose or a failed drain pump.

Does child lock keep the washer door locked?

+

On most models, child lock or control lock only disables the buttons. But it can stop you from starting the drain cycle needed to unlock the door. Turn it off following your manual.

Can a door lock problem cause other errors?

+

Yes. A failing lock can stop the washer from starting, filling or spinning, and many models display a door lock code.

What should a rental guest do if the washer door is stuck?

+

Leave it alone and contact the host. Clothes can sit in the drum for a few hours without harm. Forcing the door is how a cheap lock repair turns into a broken handle and hinge. Owners can call us and we'll schedule around the stay.
